A mother’s inspiration
Charlotte Vøhtz’s drive to create truly organic skin care began when her young daughter Alexandra was battling multiple skin allergies and eczema. She searched the high street for natural products that would be gentle on Alexandra’s sensitive skin but found that many so-called natural skin care brands used almost entirely synthetic ingredients. In fact you only need to have less than 1% natural or organic ingredients in the formulation to call it ‘natural’.
“From that moment, I realised that we all are children of the chemical age and that man-made chemicals found everywhere, combined with changing dietary habits, profoundly affect us all”.
Tailored Skin Creams for her daughter
The lack of gentle, natural products on the market spurred Charlotte on to create her own organic creams and salves, carefully tailored to her daughter’s allergy-prone skin.
“There are many motivations behind an entrepreneurial spirit – to be your own boss, make money or start something new. For me the motivation came from wanting to help treat the skin problems that Alexandra was suffering with. As any parent of a child with severe skin problems will know, it can be a long and frustrating battle to find treatments that work.”
Green People Is Born
After years of product research and development, Green People was founded in 1997. From the very beginning Charlotte’s principles meant that product performance and ethical practice were never sacrificed for profit. A close working relationship was built with product manufacturers in Europe to create the initial product range; a relationship which still exists to this day.
With a promise to never use aggressive ingredients or synthetic chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, alcohol (ethanol) or synthetic fragrances or colourants, and to never test on animals, Green People was born.
SETTING THE STANDARDS
After seeing the misleading claims made by other beauty brands, Charlotte was determined to introduce regulation in an industry where you only need 1% of natural ingredients to call your products ‘natural’. She approached the Soil Association, the leading UK organisation for organic certification, to encourage them to form standards for organic health and beauty products.
In 1999 Charlotte was invited to be on a Soil Association committee to design the first standards for organic beauty. Charlotte, and later Green People’s Cosmetic Scientist Ian Taylor, played a huge role in setting natural and organic cosmetic regulations.
2000 – 2019
SPREADING THE WORD
From the first stockist of one local independent health store in Sussex and a growing online presence, Charlotte proved that there was demand for effective organic skin care products. Green People became stocked in multiple national retailers as well as declining offers to be sold in leading pharmacies and big businesses that didn’t meet Charlotte’s high ethical standards.
2000 – 2019

During this time, Green People has been presented with over 140 awards from magazines and organisations including Natural Health Magazine, Ultimate Natural Beauty Bible and The Green Parent, along with the midwife-approved TIPS awards for the Organic Babies range.

Although Green People has come a long way from a mother simply searching for an answer for her daughter’s skin issues, we as a family business, still care for every single one of our customers, offering the same personal service that we always have.
Nature gives us the inspiration and ingredients for our plant-based products and we see it as our duty to safeguard the environment for future generations. We do this by only ever using sustainably sourced ingredients and by giving back to nature through our charitable partners.
Protecting people is also second nature to us and in addition to supporting charities that conserve the natural world, we support a select number of small health charities that do some invaluable work protecting people at a time when they need utmost comfort and care.

Teens are driving the campaign for eco-conservation and when you shop selected Oy! products you are helping us to support the education programme spearheaded by The Born Free Foundation, an animal conservation charity devoted to rescuing captive animals and keeping wildlife in the wild.
Shopping selected items from our reef-safe sun care range supports our ocean conservation charity partner, the Marine Conservation Society, who are dedicated to keeping seas, shorelines and marine life safe from harm. So far we’ve raised £90,000 from sun cream sales alone!

The Ehlers-Danlos Support UK improves quality of life for people living with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) – a group of genetic connective tissue disorders that affect the whole body, with often disabling symptoms. The charity works across the UK to support, advise and inform those living with EDS and the medical professionals working with them.
