Through M-Power, MECCA aims to help 10,000 girls finish secondary school by the year 2025, and we will achieve this through our work locally in Victoria with The Skyline Education Foundation, nationally with Stars Foundation and internationally with CAMFED.
“Education is the foundation of MECCA M-Power. It leads to empowerment and realising what’s possible.” – Jo Horgan, MECCA
So far through our educational partnerships, we have supported nearly 500 secondary school girls. By the end of the year, we want to get this number to 5,000 girls. We’ve donated over $1 million to these charities to help educate hundreds more young women through school, taking another step forward to achieving our goal.
Skyline Education Foundation
We partner with the Skyline Education Foundation in Victoria to support female students for the last two years of their secondary education. Founded in 2004, the Skyline Program is the first of its kind in Australia, offering financial, educational and emotional support to program students—many of whom stem from single parent households or have faced other adversities. The foundation provides them with opportunities to pursue study and employment options.
We also partner with the Stars Foundation to assist First Nations young women, so that they remain engaged at school, complete their final year, and transition into an independent future. Since 2015, the foundation has improved education and health outcomes for First Nations young women by providing intensive, evidence-based education and engagement programs at schools in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Victoria.
In Zimbabwe and Zambia, we partner with CAMFED, a pan-African movement revolutionizing how girls’ education is delivered. CAMFED’s model radically improves girls’ prospects of becoming independent, influential women. Its impact increases exponentially through the Association of young women educated with CAMFED’s support. Together, we multiply the number of girls in school and accelerate their path to livelihoods and leadership.
NGV Artist Collaboration
We collaborate with the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) to empower women in the arts and raise awareness around their practice. Through this unique partnership, we engage different female artists to create exceptional projects, such as our annual holiday campaign that informs our windows and packaging. As part of our holiday project, we also support the acquisition of a major work from the artist for the NGV collection.
MECCA M-Power Mentoring Program
The MECCA M-Power Mentoring Program is a unique 12-month initiative in which we propel the careers of extraordinary women in underrepresented industries, including STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), social enterprise, social impact filmmaking and the arts. We deliver program opportunities in collaboration with Engineers Without Borders Australia, Deakin University, the Foundation for Young Australians, Shark Island Institute, and the NGV.
As part of our commitment to empowering women and girls to flourish and realise their full potential, we launch limited-edition products throughout the year with proceeds going directly to M-Power. We currently have two M-Power products available: our International Day of the Girl scarf and our Lip Tint Trio. 100% of gross profits of these limited edition products will go towards supporting girls through secondary school at a local, national and international level.
