“Be not a slave of your own past. Plunge into the sublime seas, dive deep, and swim far, so shall you come back with self-respect, with new power, with an advanced experience that shall explain and overlook the old.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Ocean First was founded in 2005 to be an advocate for marine science education and ocean conservation. Being passionate divers and explorers, we recognized little was being done to educate people about our ocean, the importance and fragility of our marine environments, and what we, as both beneficiaries and custodians of these incredible ecosystems, can do to protect and preserve them for future generations.
Our mission is to create and support a community of ocean enthusiasts who are passionate about experiencing and preserving our marine environments.
Whether swimming, diving, or experiencing the ocean in their own sublime way, our customers share an infectious passion and excitement that transcends their daily lives. Our love of the ocean is the inspiration for our swim and dive instruction, travel services, marine biology education, and sustainability. Our approach to ocean conservation is simple – we believe a healthy ocean is a healthy planet.
The ocean is our lifeline. It provides our oxygen and absorbs our carbon, regulates weather and rainfall, feeds and cures billions of people, and supports the world economy. Perhaps more compelling than any other, however, is that the sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.
People often ask, “a scuba shop in Colorado?” Absolutely! What many people don’t realize is that we are all inextricably tied to the ocean. Whether you live on a sandy beach or in the high mountains a thousand miles away, the ocean affects us everyday and in many ways. At Ocean First, we enjoy introducing people to new ideas, opportunities and experiences, letting them discover what’s possible for the ocean and for themselves.
Ocean First takes a grassroots approach to swim, dive and travel. We use marine science education and ocean conservation to establish industry precedents for accountability and preservation. Our goal is to use the excitement and adventure of the ocean to educate, motivate and empower people to protect it from irreparable harm.
Our blue initiatives continue to expand and evolve. What started with replacing our lighting fixtures and adopting a Zero Waste program has grown to solar PV and thermal systems, a move to reduce all chemicals in our facility, and an industry wide certification program that assesses the sustainability of marine-based tourism operators and provides constructive solutions for improving their business practices.
We recognize that our business has inherent impacts on our planet, whether it’s the energy we use to heat our pool, the planes we board, or the dive boats that circle our bubbles below, and we use our best efforts to minimize and offset those impacts. We strive to achieve this by working with manufacturers, resorts and travel destinations that share our approach to sustainability and social responsibility.
At the end of the day, we are firm believers that we do not inherit our planet from our ancestors, but borrow it from our children and everything we do reflects this custodial sentiment.
All Ocean First events are Zero Waste & 100% vegetarian.
Our solar PV and thermal systems use the burning ball of fire in the sky to help light our facility and keep our pool a toasty 89 degrees.
