It all started in 1837
From Victorian ledgers to 21st century stationery.
The oldest surviving stationery catalogue we have in our archives, dated 1928, lists a Silvine exercise book and a drawing book. Amazingly, we still make both these products, although they look rather different today.
From the 1960s on, generations grew up using our iconic red Silvine exercise books with the laurel wreath logo on the cover. Do you remember the conversion tables on the back? If you’re old enough, you’ll know they were once in ounces and bushels before grammes and metres came along!
Nurturing our communities
Our stationery factory is based in the ancient market town of Otley, surrounded by the breathtaking countryside of the Yorkshire Dales. It’s not just where we work; it’s where most of us live too. So it’s only natural that we strive to be good neighbours and do all we can to nurture our community.
Not only are we heavily involved in local projects, but we’re also members of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust. We go to great lengths to reduce the impact our business has on the environment.
Our sustainability guide
Paper stationery is lovable stuff. But, as you sit down to write on your Silvine notebook’s first pristine page, the last thing you want is the thought of swathes of rainforest trees being decimated for this moment of pleasure.
100% of our product materials are from well managed sources, certified by the FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) or recycled.
(License number: FSC® C018241)
We choose paper from sources where workers civil rights are not violated.
We stay natural
We do not buy paper made from genetically modified trees.
Legally harvested wood only!
We do not buy paper made from illegally harvested wood – whether from natural forests, or from forests which have been cleared to make way for plantations or other non-forest enterprises.
We expect our suppliers to conduct their business in an ethical manner.
We expect our suppliers, like ourselves, to actively work towards conserving their energy and water usage and the prevention of land, air and water pollution.
