At Small Beer, we specialise in brewing classic styles below 2.8% ABV. Our Small Beer delivers world class taste at a lower ABV, giving you a beer for every moment without any of the slowdown.

As specialists in brewing below 2.8% ABV, we’re committed to providing an antidote to living life at the extremes. We believe in bridging the gap between ‘drinking’ and ‘not drinking’, which is why we’ve developed our thoughtfully curated range that serves as the perfect answer for every moment, big or small.

We are reinvigorating a lost tradition for the people who do it all. Those who think big for their tomorrow, who seek quality of ingredients & conversation, who challenge the existing and embrace innovation. For us, big thinking means pioneering a new process of brewing. We have built a bespoke brewing kit to exclusively produce lower alcohol beer – up to 2.8% ABV – the world’s first dedicated small beer brewery.

We make our beer with only the finest ingredients and natural carbonation. Our beers also spend a minimum of 6 weeks lagering in vessel to give them their undeniably clean yet pronounced flavour profiles.

Our brewing kit allows us to brew our beer to strength, so that we don’t need to remove the alcohol in any way. Instead we take the time and care to maximise flavour over alcohol creation.

You won’t see any vacuum distilling, reverse osmosis, filtration, processing, added stabilisers, arrested fermentation, clarifiers, isinglass, in our process.

Just the traditional brewing grains: malted barley, oats, rye, wheat, alongside water, hops & yeast!

In the days of Shakespeare and Chaucer, when drinking water ranged from unpalatable to fatal, small beer was enjoyed for its hydrating and nutritional properties in households, workplaces and even schools across the country. Brewed to a lower strength (0.5 – 2.8% ABV), it was a staple of British daily life.

With the provision of clean drinking water in the 19th century, the requirement for small beer passed and the art of its creation was lost.

At Small Beer Brew Co. we have reinvigorated this long forgotten category for today’s drinker, brewing classic beer styles packed with flavour in our bespoke designed, state of the art brewery.

We’re proud to call South Bermondsey our home, with the brewery nestled in between South Bermondsey station & the Old Kent Road. Pop in and you’ll find us brewing the very best Small Beer, but when the kit is at rest & the tanks are gently lagering, you’ll find a space filled with live music, art exhibitions, talks, and yoga. It’s a space for community, and a place to raise a glass with friends.

Sustainable Beer from a Sustainable Brewery – In 2019 we became London’s first B Corp™ certified Brewery!

From the start, we’ve drastically cut the water needed to brew our beer. Where industry standards typically required 8-10 pints of water for every pint of beer brewed, we designed a brewing kit that required just 1 ½ pints of water to brew one pint of Small Beer. Since embarking on our first commercial brew in 2017, we’ve saved 1.4m L of water, inspiring positive change across the industry. We recently accepted the Water Management Award for Beer from The Drinks Business Green Awards!

Brewing beer is water intensive. In a traditional brewing environment, brewers drain waste products to the brewery floor and use hoses to wash down to drain. We operate a ‘Dry Floor’ policy, the only one that we have come across in the brewing industry. It saves hundreds of litres of water every day and makes for a drier, safer, more hygienic environment.

We clean the brewery with recovered heat & water. 100% of our electricity comes from the wind, sun & sea. We are supporting the 100% Green Gas revolution, for now 12% of our gas is green and the remainder is frack-free. We are encouraging our suppliers to push boundaries on their green provisions. Our labels, boxes and business cards are all 100% recycled. We won’t add anything unnecessary to our beer, nor our packaging.

We’ve chosen to package our beer in stubby bottles because, not only do they look fantastic, their design allows 672L of beer to fit on one pallet vs. the usual 480L. This helps us reduce our carbon footprint by maximising the volume of stock per delivery.

We carefully collect the spent grain and deliver it to a farm partner to be used as feed for Dexter cows. The farmer tells us that the high water content of the grain means that his cows are more hydrated and end up drinking less water from their troughs, further reducing water usage at the heart of another business.

We donate our used grain sacks (which can’t be filled again by our malt supplier) to BOST, a social and environmental charity, based locally, who use them for storing and moving gardening materials across their neighbourhood programmes.
