Shelf systems from stocubo – an organization principle with corners and edges

A shelf is a shelf is a shelf? If you believe that, you should get to know stocubo! Everything is a little different here. Each of our shelves is a product with rough edges – in the truest sense of the word. We don’t have boring dozen items. A shelving system from stocubo is always YOUR shelving system.

And that for years. Because the system is designed in such a way that it can be expanded as required. Have you inherited a 20-volume encyclopedia? Every new book finds a good place with stocubo. Are you moving? The shelving systems can be easily dismantled and reassembled according to the new space. So you always have exactly as much storage space as you need!

Clear design and fair production

Clear design and fair production don’t work together? Are you kidding me? As early as 2000, Stefan Oberhofer wanted to prove that both are possible – and he did it! And also created a real innovation. The name stocubo is derived from the initials of its founder and the Italian term “Cubo”, which means a “cube”. In 2011 stocubo GmbH was founded and the first online shop started. In 2021, we will celebrate 10 years of innovative shelf design in Berlin.

While previously tools were always required to connect shelf elements, stocubo developed a completely new plug-in system: an aluminum bracket with which the shelf cubes are connected to one another.

stocubo still works locally, sustainably and with a strong focus on real team work in the heart of Berlin Wedding, since 2016 under the direction of stocubo managing director Julia Haneke.

The stocubo claim has always remained the same: With a targeted focus on individual furniture solutions and classic craftsmanship, stocubo consciously, consistently and with lasting passion stands out from conventional mass production.

stocubo is not only a flexible shelving system, but also a flexible team that works well together – and at the same time always adapts to new things. To achieve this, the sales team, sales and production departments work together on an equal footing, always in close contact with stocubo managing director Julia Haneke.

In 2016, the law graduate took over stocubo from carpenter and artist Stefan Oberhofer. Her motivation: conviction and passion for the product. Why is she so convinced of the modular shelving system from Berlin?

Here are three questions for stocubo managing director Julia Haneke:

What do you personally particularly like about your modular shelving system?
That you can not only put it together yourself, but also redesign it at any time. stocubo means freedom! And I actually live it myself at home. The third or fourth shelf creation has now emerged from my first cubes. And I also redesign my shelf very spontaneously: You just take off the clamp, stack it again and have a completely different piece of furniture! Nobody is bound to what was originally planned. The shelf simply adapts to life, moves with you and continues to grow with you.

And which areas have grown within the company since you took over stocubo?
When I started here in 2013, we were still a very small team: five full-time employees and a handful of students. In the last few years we have gradually structured and organized the company in such a way that now 200 cubes can be produced in series production every day and sent to customers. We are still based in Berlin Wedding, benefit from the central location and of course from the fact that it is still an up-and-coming neighborhood. The rents are therefore cheap – and there are opportunities for neighborhood help.

What are the most beautiful moments in your day-to-day work?
Fortunately there are many! I find it particularly nice to come back to production again and again, to perceive the smell of wood, to experience this hustle and bustle and simply all the craft that is behind stocubo in action. This is of course a very nice change from everyday office life. It is also important that we communicate regularly between the departments. You can tell that this is an incentive for all sides to get the most out of our little incidents.

Fair cubes at fair prices:
how we shape the future sustainably

Our sustainability strategy – bundled on one page
Everyone is talking about sustainability. It often remains unclear what exactly a company understands by this and what the implementation looks like in concrete terms. At stocubo we rule out this fair confusion and have now summarized our strategy:

Our wood supply chain: sustainable, not wooden

We work closely with our wood supplier EGGER, who is committed to sustainable forest management. The wood in our panels is produced according to high ecological and social standards and is 100% certified across the entire product chain. All stocubo elements are therefore made of PEFC-certified wood, which comes from sustainable German and French forestry.

And we put sustainability a step further: for every tree that is processed in our MDF panels, we donate 4 new trees. This is how we preserve our forests for future generations.

Our credo: produce locally, get involved in the neighborhood

We manufacture exclusively in Berlin-Wedding – we are very proud of it. The main reason for this was the desire to create fair, inclusive jobs in our neighborhood. Experienced craftsmen, young refugees, people with disabilities and team members of all ages make up our community.

A proud team that celebrates differences and learns from each other in order to work together in flat hierarchies on a product that we all believe in. At the same time, we live inclusion beyond our own company: stocubo supports local schools and day-care centers with project days, workshop visits and donations and thus actively participates in neighborhood life.

On the way to zero waste: production to order
We are a manufacturer in the heart of Berlin with limited capacities. In order to use this as efficiently as possible, we only produce to order. This means that we only produce what customers have actually ordered. In this way we guarantee that there are no superfluous goods in our warehouses that have to be disposed of at the end.

Of course, this also means that the delivery time is sometimes the full six to eight weeks – but we are usually faster. And also: time is relative. Especially those that you spend in anticipation of our timeless classics.

A lifelong companion

We are often our own harshest critics when it comes to keeping our fair production local and of high quality. This motivates us to question the status quo again and again.

Our handmade products should be able to be used and passed on for a lifetime. In our vision, our modules grow with people from the children’s room to living in a shared apartment to their own apartment.

Timeless design lasts better

We belong to the slow design movement and do not use fast-moving trends in our concept. Anyone who has our modules in their home will quickly notice how versatile our cubes can be.

The design adapts to you and your needs and can also convince where it was not originally intended. Thanks to the reduced design and the innovative clamp mechanism, the cubes can be assembled, dismantled and rebuilt as often as required without the wood suffering.

The reduction of the ecological footprint

At stocubo, we are constantly working to implement sustainability at all levels. We have been using only green electricity from renewable energy sources with Greenpeace Energy for 10 years. We send our cubes climate-neutral with DHL Go Green. When it comes to packaging, we use environmentally friendly materials such as cardboard upholstery as much as possible. Our customers in Berlin also have the option of handing back the shipping boxes for reuse (simply email ). And in the stocubo office there is almost exclusively used IT equipment and, of course, our coffee is fair trade.

stocubo – quality “made in Berlin”

“Fair cubes at fair prices” – that is the mission behind our modular shelving systems. We deliberately produce exclusively in Germany, and have therefore deliberately decided against cheap production abroad. One of the main reasons for this was the desire to secure sustainable, fair-paid jobs in Berlin – a concept that has paid off. Due to our fairly calculated prices, we are able to put part of our sales directly back into local production – and thus into the quality and further development of our cubes. In addition, social engagement in our Berlin neighborhood is part of our self-image – for example by sponsoring a local focal point school.

Customer satisfaction

Customer satisfaction is our top priority. So that we can offer a high quality standard at particularly fair prices, we have made a conscious decision to exclusively sell directly. This eliminates high dealer margins and enables us to keep our prices low. We are particularly proud of the good reviews via Trusted Shops, with which our satisfied customers distinguish us.

Anyone who opts for a shelving system from stocubo is also opting against conventional mass production. Our cubes are all meticulously handcrafted – supported by modern machines and sophisticated manufacturing processes. Our strong focus on manual labor enables us to produce precise, quality-oriented products – and that with a consistently high production volume

In doing so, stocubo has always remained true to the design and quality standards of its shelf cube designed in 2000, only other variations in shape and color as well as additional accessories have been added.

The PEFC-certified material MDF is obtained from German dealers exclusively from European production. There, the coated panels are manufactured in accordance with EU guidelines and are specially made for stocubo.

The medium-density wood fiber material is ideally suited for the production of accurate pieces of furniture and, in addition to its high breaking strength and flexural strength, impresses with its environmental compatibility. The production of the cubes is the responsibility of a team of highly qualified craftsmen, all of whom have many years of work experience. This is how we ensure that all the cubes we produce really meet our high quality standards.
